Should I rent a scooter in Bali as a solo woman?

Scooters look like the default way to get around Bali, but traffic accidents are the single biggest safety risk for travellers here.

Be honest with yourself

If you have never ridden a scooter or motorbike before, Bali's traffic — narrow lanes, unpredictable overtakes, sand and gravel on corners — is not the place to learn.

The safer alternatives

• Ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab) for short trips, by car or as a passenger on a scooter taxi
• A private driver for day trips — usually very affordable when split or booked for a half day
• Walking within your area — Canggu, Ubud and Sanur centres are all walkable
