How do I know if I am being overcharged?

Ask two or three people the price before you agree, and expect a fair tourist price rather than a local one.

A small price gap between locals and visitors is normal and not worth a fight. What you want to avoid is the ten-times version: a 400,000 rupiah ride that should be 120,000, or a money changer counting notes twice. Check ride apps for a reference price even if you take a private car, use official money changers with a proper shopfront, and count cash yourself before leaving the counter.
