How do I avoid taxi and transport scams in Bali?
Use ride-hailing apps or the official airport counter, agree the price before you get in a private car, and never accept a ride from someone who approaches you.
The transport scams in Bali are annoying rather than dangerous, and easy to sidestep:
- Drivers at the airport or harbour offering rides before the official counter — always walk past them
- "The meter is broken" — either agree a fixed price upfront or book through an app instead
- Fake Grab or Gojek drivers calling your name at pickup points — check the plate and driver name in the app before getting in
When in doubt, order through the app. The price is fixed, the ride is tracked, and you have the driver's details.
